Alessandro Sorbello often laughs when he thinks about working in the marijuana industry. The serial entrepreneur worked in the IT sector since the late 90’s and managed projects for the Italian Government. His clients included a host of international corporate clients looking to affiliate with the cultural power of the Made in Italy brand. In 2010, his work with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs resulted in Sorbello receiving a Knighthood from the President of the Republic of Italy. Alessandro’s focus has been on helping people through good business practices. “Promoting Italy and Italian lifestyle was a pleasure, the culture is universally loved and appreciated,” he explained.

All that changed in 2016, nowadays, he runs one of Australia’s fastest growing medical cannabis companies. As CEO of Medicinal Organic Cannabis Australia (MOCA), he has taken the company from its base in Sydney to expansion into the emerging New Zealand market and is now working extensively with Italian cannabis cultivators.

Sorbello partnered with online giant in 2019 and has seen exponential growth. Over the past 12 months, his focus has been on funding the company’s rapid expansion and he has been in talks with global players seeking entry into the Australian market including representatives of the cannabis brand of Australian golfer Greg Norman.

There are many big deals in the cannabis field and projects include Casa Verde Capital (known for its partnership with Snoop Dog). Since launching, it has raised a whopping $10 million.

Sorbello suggests these tips for succeeding in the marijuana business:

Stay focused. The industry is teeming with opportunities and it is easy to attempt to go in a many directions. Keep focused on the course you set out to achieve.

Develop your company’s financial capabilities or find investors. The minimum investment range for a newly constructed cultivation facility is $ 5 to $12 million. This includes licensing, permits, facility compliance, staffing, technology, security systems, Human Resources systems, legal, tax and general operational compliance.

In the meantime, he spends his time travelling between operations in Australasia and Europe and enjoying helping people through the healing powers of medicinal cannabis.
